John McEnroe, the former American tennis ace, once shared a nostalgic detail about his relationship with Patty Smyth, a well-known singer, and songwriter. Smyth had used her fame from her time in the band ‘Scandal’ to launch a lucrative solo career. Fans were surprised to hear the intricate details about the Hall of Famer’s married life during their podcast appearance in 2021.

Their 25-year marriage proves that they haven’t lost their spark. Smyth attributes their longevity to their ability to keep a low profile. McEnroe and Smyth have been together since the former ATP world no.1’s publicized divorce with Tatum O’Neal.

John McEnroe once shared a personal secret to his successful marriage with Smyth

In the exclusive podcast, McEnroe said,I mean the key to success uh in any marriage is you have to compromise and you have to trust each other and also hopefully have a lot of sex that’s it.” 

McEnroe stated that he believes there are certain things that one should not say. He admitted that there were times when he didn’t mean what he said and may have crossed the line. According to the singer-songwriter, she followed her instincts, and when she met McEnroe, everything happened quickly but easily. She was both grateful and surprised to discover their strong bond.

The three-time Wimbledon Champion and Smyth raised six children together, four from prior relationships and two daughters (Ava and Anna). They met while both of their careers were changing. McEnroe was about to retire, and Smyth was a single mother.

McEnroe once claimed Andy Warhol ruined his sex life

In his book, John McEnroe lamented how Warhol ruined his sexual life. He claimed that the artist was always up in everyone’s face with his camera, “being a pain in the a**” at late-night parties where one might loosen one’s collar and try to find someone. The seven-time Grand Slam champion claimed this before eventually growing to appreciate the late artist’s work.

When Warhol died in 1987, McEnroe had paid about $30,000 at a charity auction in 1986. He commissioned the artist to paint two portraits of himself and his then-wife Tatum O’Neal. The artist photographed them for the first time at their home. The works were later sold by him for more than $400,000 at a Sotheby’s charity auction in 2008.
