Grigor Dimitrov recently revealed how, at one point, he “wanted to re-introduce” himself. The cutthroat world of tennis can be a blessing as well as a curse in the different phases of an athlete’s life. Shedding light on both of these prospects, Dimitrov was spotted opening up about the inner turmoil he faced throughout the ups and downs of his career.

Before becoming a pro, Grigor Dimitrov had a great junior career. Winning back-to-back major boys’ singles titles at the 2008 US Open and Wimbledon Championships, he steadily climbed to the top of the global rankings. However, his journey as a professional athlete has not been smooth. After a prolonged wait, his incredible performance at the Miami Open gained him back his position in the world’s top 10 for the first time since 2018. Referring to this huge comeback, he said, “I almost felt at times things were hand-in-hand, and I just really wanted to re-introduce myself to me.”

After the Australian Open game in 2017 against Rafael Nadal, Dimitrov’s career went downhill as he failed to maintain consistency on the court. Grigor Dimitrov didn’t win any titles, only making it to the final of the Grand Slam once. Although he lost most of them in the first three rounds, Dimitrov never backed off. “That was part of my growth and part of why longevity became one of the things for me,” he said.

Reflecting on his growth and the painful experience that helped him climb up the ladder once again, Grigor Dimitrov further added, “There’s a part of you that just forgets to learn life.” With “longevity” as his main motto, he kept on working hard. And soon, his performance started improving throughout the year 2023. He made it to the Brisbane finals at the start of 2024, and also had an incredible run to the finals of the Miami Open.

A significant shift in Grigor Dimitrov’s coaching group also aided in his comeback. He reconnected with old coach Daniel Vallverdu and hired Jamie Delgado after parting ways with Dante Bottini in late 2022. And after closely watching him, Delgado mentioned the mental growth Dimitrov has experienced in his journey.

Grigor Dimitrov is “more positive and trusting his game more,” says his coach

Grigor Dimitrov’s current coach gave an insight into the development that he has noticed in his approach to the game. “I think in big moments he’s being a bit braver now than he was,” Delgado said. Dimitrov himself acknowledged the fact that he is more concerned about living in the moment now. He mentioned having personal battles that he hoped to conquer, and now, he is looking forward to achieving them one at a time.

Further continuing on Grigor Dimitrov, Delgado was caught mentioning, “When I saw him play some of the bigger guys at the beginning of the year (2023) he was a bit passive and didn’t look like he really believed he could win. And now, whether he wins or loses, you can feel that he’s much more positive and trusting his game more.” Fans are now excited to see him back in his form once again.

Grigor Dimitrov’s incredible journey continues to inspire people all over the world, and his tale serves as evidence of the transformational potential of even the most basic life lessons. Do you agree with coach Delgado’s narrative of him?
