Like everyone, Grigor Dimitrov wants a piece of the pie as well. Though not sweet in any form, it is for sure Jannik Sinner‘s doping saga isn’t going away anytime soon. With players already mad at the preferential treatment of the Italian talent, and some looking to challenge his standing, Dimitrov wasn’t looking to be left behind. Subsequently, the Bulgarian superstar has shared his take on the “strange” situation.
Earlier this season, Sinner tested positive twice for a banned anabolic, Clostebol, during his Indian Wells Masters outing. Despite avoiding a ban and maintaining his innocence with the ITIA, citing his unawareness about the banned substance’s administration and explaining that his physiotherapist was responsible for the mishap, several players haven’t been happy with the outcome. With notable personalities like Nick Kyrgios and Denis Shapovalov condemning the ‘free pass’ granted to the World No. 1, Dimitrov finds the timing of the situation funny as well.
Talking to the Bulgarian daily, ‘TennisKafe‘, Dimitrov notably highlighted that the context of Sinner’s doping situation seems lost, prompting players to call out “double standards.” To much amazement, the 33-year-old rhetorically mentioned having lost ATP points to Sinner, owing to his defeat to the Italian star multiple times this season. For those unaware, the duo locked horns twice this season, with Sinner prevailing in both encounters. However, the Bulgarian pro quickly noted that he did not control the cards. Dimitrov concluded his opinion by closing the lid on the situation, urging himself not to get disappointed over questions he doesn’t have answers to.

He said, “The whole thread seems lost, and maybe that makes everyone question the situation and suspect a double standard. Considering I played against him in very important matches this season, hypothetically things could’ve looked different. Maybe he wouldn’t have played at all, and It makes you wonder. Would they give me back the points of those matches? Perhaps. But I don’t dwell too much on it. Truth is, there are things you simply can’t control. If I start regretting or searching for answers that don’t exist, I’ll end up more disappointed. But yes, the timing of this whole thing felt strange to me.”
