The Drake curse strikes again! All of us know ‘Kiki, Do You Love Me?’ or have danced to the beat of ‘One Dance’ at some point in our lives. He’s a great musician no doubt, but the name Drake evokes a certain fear in the world of sports. He’s like Pennywise coming to turn, whichever sport team or sportsperson he endorses doesn’t fetch positive results. The entertainer’s latest victim might be Taylor Fritz, just before the most important match of his career at the US Open.
Fritz will play against Jannik Sinner in less than an hour and while many are betting on the home favorite to win the final, Drake’s favor might go against Frit. Why? Well, the 5-time Grammy winner is well-known as an avid sports fan, from football to UFC to baseball. But whoever he supports ends up losing the next time they play.
Remember Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury in 2023? Remember Barcelona vs Real Madrid in 2022? Then back in August 2023, Drake was spotted wearing an Ohtani shirt and we all know how late August and September went for the former LA Angels player. With his latest bet on Taylor Fritz, fans can’t help but feel that Drake might have ruined the American’s chances already!

The God’s Plan singer is not oblivious to his horrible sports legacy as he writes in the caption, “Continuing my record as the most daring sports better in history with the most losses. going underdog,” with laughing emojis. But when a fan posted this on X, immediately the comment section declared that this spelled trouble for Fritz.

“Drake has placed a bet on Taylor Fritz to beat Jannik Sinner in the US Open final tonight. A huge task for Fritz ahead – beat the world No. 1, end the wait for an American men’s singles Grand Slam champ AND now has to overcome the Drake curse,” read the original post.
Indeed, Taylor Fritz had never before gone past the quarter-finals of the last four Slams he had been in. Now he’s a finalist but in a precarious situation. “That means Fritz is doomed. Drake has the loser’s touch now,” one fan wrote. While another said, “Poor Fritz, he just got the kiss of death.”

Sinner will be fighting for his second Grand Slam title of the year, as well as his career after winning the Australian Open earlier this year. The World No. 1 is in prime form and looking ready to dominate the underdog. Imagine, an American player at an American major in front of the American crowd is an underdog right now. One fan referenced the fanbase that Sinner called the ‘Carota Boys,’ a group of young tennis-playing fans, that was formed after Sinner was eating a carrot at a match. “Congrats #carotafam” the fan wrote. Another fan agreed, “It’s over for Fritz. In my opinion.”

Take a look across sports. Whether it’s the NBA or MLB, Formula 1, or the NFL, there’s rarely a sport that Drake has not touched. There have been instances of certain teams or players breaking the curse and proving Drake’s prediction right. Like the Super Bowl this year when the Chiefs won or when Israel Adesanya finally defeated Alex Pereira at the UFC 287 final last April.
But larger evidence says Taylor Fritz might be in trouble. He might not be able to end the American men’s Grand Slam drought. However, just the fact that he’s in the final is already a big achievement. But winning the title would be something else, wouldn’t it? Do you think Fritz can break the Drake curse?
