When it comes to tennis, a coach-player relationship goes beyond simple mentorship and represents a deep link based on mutual respect, trust, and a shared desire for excellence. As Novak Djokovic’s coach, Goran Ivanisevic, steps down from his position, it prompts a heartfelt look into their shared experience and what the Serbian prodigy hopes to accomplish in the future. It has been a week since Djokovic declared that he was parting ways with his coach after almost five years of their partnership.

Ivanisevic gave Djokovic an emotional farewell message in which he summed up his wishes for Djokovic’s future ambitions. He emphasized, especially, his quest for the elusive “Olympic gold medal”—the only major trophy that Djokovic has yet to win.

In light of Djokovic’s extraordinary accomplishments, Ivanisevic recognized the Olympic gold medal as the crucial component that completes the picture of Djokovic’s remarkable career. Novak Djokovic had an unsatisfactory start to the season after his Indian Wells defeat and corresponding withdrawal from the Miami Open. However, Ivanisevic still maintains faith in the Serbian. “I believe that Novak will find motivation; I am sure of it. I wish him Olympic gold with all my heart, even more than the Slams,” Ivanisevic stated during an interview.

Further continuing his point, he said, “It’s something that he wants. He feels like he owes it to someone, although he doesn’t owe anyone anything. I wish for him to succeed in the Olympics.” The Olympics haven’t been kind to Novak Djokovic. Although, under the guidance of Ivanisevic, Djokovic has earned nine Grand Slam victories, an Olympic gold medal remains a dream for him.

He talked about the training and preparations that he has been taking for his upcoming performance in the Olympics. In an interview, Djokovic emphasized that it is one of the primary objectives for next year, besides the Grand Slams.

“But my plan is to play the Olympics because it’s one of the most important events in the history of sports. That’s where you also represent the country, and the feeling of being part of it is a huge honor,” he said last year.
