“Going To Be In The Finals”: WTA Star Picks Diego Schwartzman Over Rafael Nadal at French Open 2020

The French Open 2020 has been home to several upsets. Over the past week, we’ve witnessed top seeds tumbling in the draw. The tournament is moving at a fast pace, and people are already expecting a Djokovic vs. Nadal final, but one WTA player has high hopes for Argentine Diego Schwartzman! 

Schwartzman is currently in the last-eight at Roland Garros, locking horns with his former doubles partner Dominic Thiem. While Thiem is the heavy favorite to win this one, Schwartzman’s recent run of form makes him a tough contender. 

Though Diego hardly found any form at US Open 2020, he has truly struck the right chord here in Paris. The 28-year-old is looking to book his first-ever Grand Slam semi-final ticket, and he has massive support from WTA star Nadia Podoroska.

In a recent press conference, Podoroska was questioned about the potential men’s singles finalists. Obviously, the reporter put in the names of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. However, Podoroska was not pleased with the choices and put forth her own prediction.

When asked if she accepts the Djokovic-Nadal final clash, the Argentine disagreed.

“No, for me, no. Diego Schwartzman is going to be in the finals,” Podoroska said and backed up her compatriot. 

Well, this means that Diego Schwartzman has to outplay his good friend Dominic Thiem in the quarters and then move on to face a bigger challenge. The 28-year-old will have to beat Rafa Nadal in the semis if he is to make the finals as per Nadia Podoroska’s prediction. Well, he has done it before and he can do it again!

Diego Schwartzman and Dominic Thiem are the thickest of friends on the ATP circuit. A couple of days ago, Dominic Thiem survived a scary fourth-round clash against Hugo Gaston. Following the win, he met Diego Schwartzman outside the court, who was then his upcoming opponent. 

The two had a bit of banter and then decided on a pact. Here it is in Schwartzman’s words, “Domi arrived and we were kidding, ‘Okay, this is the last time we talk to each other until Tuesday.’ He was going to hit me in my legs, but nothing happened.” 

Diego Schwartzman has a really good record on clay, but he will be put to the test by Thiem. Can the Argentine cause an upset and pull off a major victory against the Austrian?
