The 2022 Wimbledon final was the greatest achievement of Nick Kyrgios. The bad boy of tennis had reached the final of singles slam for the first time in his career. It started off great for him as well, as he won the first set against Novak Djokovic. But the comeback king didn’t lose his wits and won three sets continuously after dropping the first set.

Nick Kyrgios recently looked back at that moment and talked about why he couldn’t keep up with the Djoker for the rest of the match. For him, the major distinction between Djokovic and himself was the ability to keep composure.

The Djoker had played in many slam finals before the 2022 Wimbledon. He has also won many finals where he had to come back after being down two sets. A similar show occurred in 2022, where the Djoker beat Kyrgios after being down one set. Kyrgios, who was angry at his defeat, opened up about his loss in the ‘Rich Eisen Show’.

Kyrgios said, “I just felt like the biggest separator between Djokovic and I in that final (Wimbledon 2022) was just experience. You know, being in the finals, I think he had been in 30-plus Grand Slam finals. But that was my first one. So that alone, he could draw on so many experiences being down two sets to love. He’s seen every sort of situation.”

He further talked about how Novak Djokovic’s composture helped him triumph. “So I feel for me, it was really hard to rattle him, you know, came out played a flawless first set of tennis, won the first set, and he just, he was just so composed. And I feel like if I made another couple Grand Slam finals and was able to navigate through that, maybe we would have a different result, but he was just, he’s a GOAT for a reason.” added Kyrgios quite candidly.

However, this is not the first time this is happening. Nick Kyrgios previously praised the Djoker’s composure when he discussed meeting him in the 2022 Wimbledon final earlier this year.

In Netflix’s tennis docuseries, ‘Break Point’, Kyrgios featured and discussed his performance in the 2022 Wimbledon final. Speaking about the match, he said that Djokovic had significantly more experience than him, and he was just a kid from Canberra. He felt like he shouldn’t be there, but he was, and winning could make him the new model of tennis.

Pressure crumbled him, but Djokovic kept calm. Kyrgios lauded him as he further said that the Djoker would stay calm in a situation where other players would panic. Even if he does panic, he doesn’t let it show and stays centered on ensuring that he plays his best. Kyrgios’ evaluation of Novak Djokovic reveals why the Serb manages to come back after losses and keeps winning to this day.
