“I’m gonna retire. I’m gonna retire, man,” is how Daniil Medvedev vented his frustration during the opening match at the ATP Finals. Playing against Taylor Fritz, the Russian suffered a straight-set defeat (6-4, 6-3). However, more than the defeat, what caught the eye of many was his controversial on-court behavior. Even the likes of Paulo Bertolucci and Adriano Panatta, the Italian legends, had nothing but criticism for Russian’s act.

During his intense match against Taylor Fritz in Turin, Daniil Medvedev lost his composure, especially after a series of mistakes that cost him the first set. His frustration began with three double faults in a row, which gave Fritz the opening set. Medvedev reacted by throwing his racket and received a warning from the umpire. But instead of calming down, Medvedev got worse in the second set.

Fritz took a 4-2 lead after a fortunate lob winner that barely touched inside the court. While Fritz immediately apologized for the lucky shot, Medvedev’s frustration had already peaked. He threw his racket again, sending it flying behind the baseline, and even smashed it against an advertising board. This resulted in a second warning and a point penalty, allowing Fritz to start the next game with a 15-0 advantage.

His actions however have had serious consequences. Italian tennis icons Paolo Bertolucci and Adriano Panatta have sharply criticized Medvedev’s behavior. Bertolucci suggested drastic measures, saying, “He should urgently go to a nursing home and take some tranquilizers. But it’s a matter of a couple of weeks at least, eh.” Adding to the criticism, Panatta commented, “Daniil doesn’t realize that the others are moving forward while he is regressing.”

Medvedev suggested that he would take retirement from the sport should the umpire fail to provide a ball. While the chair umpire tried to calm him down, he did not seem to care much about them and kept yelling. The strong remarks from these Italian legends reflect growing frustration with Medvedev’s conduct and hint that his temper may be holding back his progress on the court. However, the Italian legends were not the only ones who suggested their frustration with his actions. The retired British tennis player also made her thoughts clear on the same.

Retired British tennis player has her say on the Daniil Medvedev’s outburst

Retired British tennis player Colin Fleming openly criticized the Russian’s behavior, calling out his actions as reckless and potentially damaging to his relationship with fans. Fleming, who was providing commentary, highlighted a specific moment when Medvedev smashed a microphone on the court in frustration.

“Had to be. He’s completely smashed that microphone; there’s going to be a fine, and I’m sure paying the damages as well,” Fleming remarked. Warning Medvedev of the possible consequences of his actions, he added, “Careful Daniil, you’re going to really lose the crowd here.”

Fleming’s disapproval didn’t stop there. When Medvedev appeared to blame a slippy grip for his outbursts, Fleming was quick to call out what he saw as an excuse. “He’s just being a bit silly here, trying to pretend the grip is slippy. Pushing his luck right now,” Fleming suggested, implying that Medvedev’s attempts to justify his behavior were unconvincing and unnecessary.

Through these candid remarks, Fleming offered a firm reminder that while high emotions are part of the game, actions like these risk alienating fans and bringing a negative spotlight to Medvedev’s professional conduct.
