Boris Becker is an eight-time grand slam champion. What’s more, the German has also been at rank 1 for three weeks. However, Becker has had a tumultuous life post-retirement. The UK police arrested Becker last year and sent him to jail for hiding assets and not paying off his loans. Recently, he was released and sent back to Germany. When Becker was playing, he had the winner’s mindset which could’ve led to him seeing himself as untouchable. Moreover, his current girlfriend corroborated that Becker’s “invincible” attitude led to many pitfalls in his personal life.
“Boom! Boom! The World Vs Boris Becker” is an upcoming documentary that will portray the wonky life of Boris Becker. It will cover his time on the court, his off-court personality and his rocky post-retirement life.

Alex Gibney is a famed director of various documentaries. The Guardian talked to Gibney about his experience with the Boris Becker documentary. Gibney interviewed Becker and several other tennis players who played against him.
Becker had made various statements to Gibney about his personal life that turned out to be false. For example, Becker told Gibney that he had stopped taking sleeping pills in 1990 which was proven false as per his own memoir.
Gibney said that Becker believed every word he said. He added that a person’s dialogue with themselves can make them believe what they are saying. Gibney further said that athletes tell themselves that in order to push themselves to greater heights. However, this mindset when applied in your personal life can bring about a lot of trouble in your relationships.

“The stories that you have to tell yourself can then inspire you to great heights,” Gibney says. “But those kinds of stories aren’t so useful when dealing with personal or financial matters.”
Even Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro, Boris Becker’s girlfriend, said that one needs to have such a mindset in order lift themselves up. Thinking of yourself as a champion can make you think that you’re untouchable.
She put it in a very straightforward manner: “In order to be a champion, you have to believe you’re invincible. That probably brings you to a level where you think you’re untouchable in real life.”
