What a fight! American tennis star, Tommy Paul showed a fair bit of resilience in his 6(3)-7,6(5)-7,1-6 loss to the world number one. He did everything he could to cause a massive upset at the 2024 US Open. This was his first meeting with Sinner after his two-set defeat to the Italian in Toronto in the 2023 season. Sinner now leads the H2H by 3-1. However, despite the loss, fans are quite pleased with the performance of the 27-year-old American.
There was heavy support for Paul inside the stadium and fans were spotted chanting “U-S-A” and “Let’s go, Tommy! Let’s go!” It was an electrifying atmosphere inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium. There were moments where the audience cheered after each of Sinner’s errors.
However, despite having the whole crowd against him, Jannik Sinner still managed to end the match on a winning note. With this emphatic triumph over the American, Sinner has now become the only player to reach the QF of all four major tournaments this season. It was really a stellar fightback. Sinner truly showed why is a true champion in every aspect of the game. Be it physically or mentally!

Just before this mega match, Paul said, “It makes it more fun. You have the crowd behind you. Obviously most of the matches here, when you’re an American and you’re playing a foreign guy, you’re going to have the crowd support on your side.” He admitted how gaining momentum right from the get-go plays a big role in these types of matches. He promised fans that he’d try to “mix things up” a bit against Sinner. Paul nearly managed to disrupt all the equations, but eventually, the world number one yet again showed us why he’s currently at the top of the table.
Reflecting on these, another fan wrote, “Tough break for Tommy Paul. Gave it everything, but was just outskilled. Hats off to the USA crowd who stuck with him the whole way. #USOpen2024 #LaborDay #tennis #janniksinner #USA.”
Tommy Paul knew this would be a tough match but he was extremely “excited” to play against Sinner. He even stated that he thinks, “[Sinner] is probably the best ball striker on tour.” The number 14, did all his preparations accordingly to challenge one of the best in the world, but he was literally “out skilled” by Jannik Sinner.
Some them went a little further and reminded the tennis world about the recent controversies surrounding Sinner’s doping saga, “Tommy Paul was so good – only to loose to the best, and arguably enhanced, player in the world. Love them both. Hard not to question the outcome or even Jannik’s presence given the recent positive testing.”

Recalling a few moments from their previous encounter, Paul said that they have played some “great matches” in the past. He added, “I remember I played him (Sinner) on clay, had some match points against him. Then the last match–I think it was in Toronto–he played awesome. I didn’t feel like I did too much wrong. He kind of took the racquet out of my hands. I’m definitely going to try and, you know, make it uncomfortable for him.” He said this before the match and now perhaps he’d be a bit disappointed to lose it by such a close margin.
