We call our superheroes when we are in real trouble. Imagine a scenario where no one is on your team, and you’re standing alone on a tennis court, playing to save your life. Which tennis superstar would you pick to save your life? Will it be anyone from the ‘Big Four’ or someone else? Well, recently, the 42-year-old American former tennis player, Mardy Fish was spotted snubbing the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic to pick his legendary compatriot to save his life in a similar scenario. Who was his pick, though?
Well, previously in 2019, we saw Mardy Fish sparking a debate among tennis fans when with a tweet. He claimed, “If you had to pick one male tennis player today to play 1 set with your life on the line, who would you choose? I’d pick Isner… Remember, just 1 set.” Then recently, Scott Barclay, a journalist and the co-host of ‘Murray Musings Podcasts’ shared a tweet that had pictures of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and John Isner. In the captions, he wrote, “If you had to pick one of these 4 players to win a match to save your life, who you picking?“
After seeing this post, Mardy Fish replied that post with a GIF saying, “BOOM” and then Barclay further asked him who’d be his pick on the same. In reply, interestingly, Fish yet again snubbed Federer and Nadal in favor of the former number 8, John Isner. He commented, “If it was 1 set for my life… Isner 2014. I’ll just take my chances in a tiebreak.” In 2014, Isner had an outstanding season and he successfully managed to clinch his 8th and 9th titles of his career.

What are Mardy’s thoughts on tennis legends like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, though? Well, last year, during an interview the American claimed, “The 2011 Djokovic and 2005 Federer were the best players that I’ve ever played. If those two played on a medium-paced hard court, I think Novak would win, if they played on a faster surface I think Roger would win, and any slower surface Novak would win. 2011 Djokovic – the best player of all time.”
Previously even in 2021, he was also seen heaping praise on the ‘Swiss Maestro’ by saying, “Roger had this aura and invincibility about him, where you just could never breathe, cause he could turn it like that.. Boom. Point’s over.” Fish’s admiration for Federer clearly gets portrayed through these little moments, but which is his favorite Roger Federer moment, though? Interestingly, in reply to this question, he recalled a moment from the 2003 Wimbledon Championships and said, “2003 Wimbledon, 3rd Rd I play this Federer guy. Called a friend after my 2nd Rd win and said ‘I think I’ve got a great draw now. I don’t think this guy is all that great! Got crushed and he won the tournament.“

Earlier this year, Mady Fish was also spotted joking about Rafael Nadal’s win over the legendary Bjorn Borg’s son, Leo Borg. After Nadal’s win in Bastad, during an instance when fans were wondering who was better on clay between Nadal and (Bjorn) Borg, Fish joked about this topic on X and tweeted, “Welp, that settles it.” What does his pick, John Isner have to say about these tennis greats, though?
John Isner picks Roger Federer as the GOAT
Well, John Isner has faced Roger Federer 10 times in his career and the Swiss has an 8-2 record over the American in the H2H. Speaking on the incredible records of these tennis greats during a previous interview with BBC (2019), Isner said, “It’s amazing to look at the Grand Slam stats. I mean, what has Roger won, 20? And he’s, like, s–t, like, he can’t even say he’s the greatest player of all time at 20 Grand Slams. It’s incredible. These guys are pushing each other. Rafa has 19 and then Djokovic is 16, not slowing down. It’s remarkable. These guys are pushing each other. I think when all’s said and done, it’s going to be arguing who’s better, Michael [Jordan] or LeBron [James]? It will impossible to tell.“

However, after that in 2022 during a conversation on the Tennis Channel’s Warm & Fuzzy, he was asked which tennis player would he want to be trapped in an elevator with. In reply to this question, surprisingly, he brought an end to the GOAT debate. Isner said, “Logically, I think it’s Federer, he’s the GOAT, you know, take his brain a little bit. We actually have a lot in common to talk about, professional wrestling, he’s a fan of that, not many people know that.” Even in 2018, there was an instance when he said, “He (Federer) is men’s tennis in my opinion.“
Which was his favorite Roger Federer moment in his career? Well, in September during an interview, John Isner was spotted highlighting his match against the Swiss at the 2018 Laver Cup. He revealed how hugely impressed was he by Federer’s greatness during that epic contest. What are his thoughts on Rafael Nadal, though? Last month, John Isner shared his experience of facing Nadal on the Tour. During an episode of Nothing Major Podcast, he said, “He (Nadal) was such a bully from that first ball onward. He was just ridiculous. I would put him as the greatest competitor in the history of sports. That’s how highly I think of him.” Share your thoughts on the comments made by these two American legends about Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
