Novak Djokovic has sailed through the initial rounds of the Roland Garros 2024. The Serbian ace is certainly looking forward to claiming his 4th French Open title as the 14-time Roland Garros champion, Rafael Nadal, was ousted in the first round. But, it seems that the 24-time Grand Slam champion is missing not only the ‘Big 3’ group but also the motivation.
The Big 3 dominated tennis courts for over two decades, disassembled after the retirement of Roger Federer. And as Rafa has played only selective matches in the last 2 years, the Serb’s competitive motivation has also waned. Consequently, now Djokovic is solely focused on playing for his country. And winning the missing jewel from his vast Majors collection, an Olympic Gold.
In a recent post-match conference at the French Open, a reporter asked him whether his motivation was burning as strong as ever or if he struggling to keep up. The world no.1 answered in affirmative, and reiterated, “I’ve said it recently that I did struggle with motivation on a constant basis. Motivation I’ve had for 20 years of professional tennis.” One would certainly ponder what has changed now concerning the last 20 years. A lot, but the major change has been his rivals evolving away from the tennis court, particularly Roger and Rafa, recovering from injuries.

The Serb further explained that he had anticipated it with time, and this might happen in the future. He further added, “And I know the moment will arrive sooner or later where I’m going to have off weeks, where I’m struggling to push myself to deliver what needs to be delivered on the court.” However, while his motivation might have taken a hit, it has not stopped World No. 1 from showing up with conviction at practice.
The world no.1 certainly knows what it takes to remain at the top, and he is ready to challenge himself and be there for his country. He said, “But in terms of my commitment to practice week and session that hasn’t gone down. Whatever my team and I agree on, whatever they want I do it… But it’s true that with my mind I’m focused pretty much on the Grand Slams and Olympics this year. I play for my country.”
