A horrible moment unfolded at the French Open 2022, as Alexander Zverev had to retire from the match against Rafael Nadal after twisting his ankle. The incident happened in the second set, as the score was 6-6, and the set was poised for another tie-break.

At that moment, Zverev took a horrible fall and was screaming in pain. Later, the authority had to carry him inside the dressing room in a wheelchair. Later, the German returned to the court on crutches with Nadal by his side and shook the hands of the chair umpire, and hugged Nadal to call off the match. During the post-match interview, Nadal gave a heartfelt speech to his fellow tennis star.

Rafael Nadal gave a heartfelt speech for Alexander Zverev

When asked about the match and Zverev, Nadal said, “It’s very tough, very sad for him [Zverev], honestly. He was playing an unbelievable tournament. He’s a very good colleague on the tour. I know how much he is fighting to win a Grand Slam, but for the moment he was very unlucky. The only thing I am sure is he will win one – much more than one.”

“It’s been a super tough match…it’s difficult to say a lot in this situation. Of course, for me, being in the final of Roland-Garros one more time is a dream, without a doubt, but at the same time that finish, that way…I have been in the small room with Sascha before we came back on court. To see him crying there was a very tough moment. All the very best to him,” Nadal further said, praising the German player.

According to recent reports, Zverev could suffer a Grade 2 or 3 lateral ligament tear and possibly a fibular fracture, which could rule him out of tennis for many months.

Before Zverev’s unfortunate injury, the match was pretty even, as both players were playing some exceptional tennis. In the first set, Zverev had 4 set points in the tie-break, but Nadal made a terrific comeback and won the set. In the second set, the Spaniard took an early break, but Zverev again bounced back and broke Nadal.

As Zverev was about to serve for the set, he made a double fault and uttered unacceptable language, receiving a code violation from the chair umpire, much to the irritation of the German. He then started arguing with the umpire and momentarily lost his concentration. After that, Nadal again broke Zverev and tied the set, 6-6.
