The Cincinnati Masters is one of Roger Federer‘s most memorable tournaments in his career. Given that he first debuted Sneak Attack by Roger at the 2015 Cincinnati tournament, it is the competition that holds a special place in his career. It has been eight years since that innovation happened on the court.

As one of the best skills on the court, many other tennis players over the years, like Nick Kyrgios and Casper Ruud, have attempted to imitate this tennis attack. No one has forgotten about Federer’s SABR, though, and to commemorate the incredible tennis shot after a mere eight years, a well-known tennis channel created a lovely ode to the Swiss ace.

Eight years since Roger Federer debuted the SABR tennis shot

Back in 2015, in one of his matches at the Cincinnati Open, the 20-time Grand Slam champion introduced a new shot that grabbed a lot of attention, both positive and negative. While some people looked at it as an unfair move, others found it amazing. Now, eight years later, while the former tennis legend will not be seen playing that shot on the court anymore, there are other stars who have learned that shot in order to improve their game.

Recently, as the Western and Southern Open is about to start, tennis TV gave a beautiful tribute to Federer’s SABR on its 8th birthday. Along with that, the page also shared the list of tennis players who have aced the shot on the tennis court. In addition, the post was captioned, “8 years since the birth of the SABR in Cincinnati – but who can copy Federer’s signature move the best? 🥷(no voting for Roger😉)”

While no one could beat the 20-time Grand Slam champion, the former world number-one tennis player talked about how the sneak attack was actually born.

How was Federer’s SABR born?

Last year, after the Laver Cup, in the course of his long farewell interview, the 41-year-old tennis legend also talked about how SABR was born. He started off by saying that the attack had nothing to do with Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic and that it all started as a joke during the 2015 Cincinnati.

His coach at that time, Severin Luthi, wanted him to try to pitch more, and he started doing that, and all those times they practiced in a totally relaxed way, laughing and trying the craziest shot, it was something that turned out to be expectedly fabulous. Since then, it has become one of the most popular tennis shots.
