Jannik Sinner’s recent triumph at the Australian Open 2024 not only gave fans a glimpse of his excellent potential but also highlighted the heartfelt connection with his parents. As Sinner thanked his family after his victory in Melbourne, he acknowledged the trust his parents placed in him to make important life decisions. “I went away from home when I was 14 years old. So I had to grow up quite fast, trying to cook for myself, trying to make laundry,” the 22-year-old said in his victory speech, something which Robbie Koenig took note of.

He highlighted Sinner’s admiration for his parents on the Tennis Channel Inside-In podcast, pointing out the significance of parental support in the young champ’s journey. Koenig mentioned, “There was a lot of it on social media when he said they trusted me to go and make those decisions…I don’t believe that most 14-year-olds have that maturity that Jannik had, that have the discipline.”

“And I think, for the most part, kids at that age need a bit of a nudge and sometimes it’s more of a bit of a nudge, especially in our sport where the score level is so hard, the physical level is so hard, the mental level is so hard. So I look at Jannik’s statement as very much the outlier.”

Koenig also highlighted how coaches should take Jannik Sinner’s statement with a grain of salt because the same won’t be the case for every 14-year-old looking to make a mark in the tennis world. “In my experience, it is the road that is less traveled…I think Jannik was very fortunate that the guy that was his mentor at the age of 14 was Riccardo Piatti.”
