Earlier, Tiafoe became the first man from his country to reach the semifinals of the US Open since 2006. Additionally, he was also the first African-American man to reach this stage of the tournament since Arthur Ashe in 1972.

At the time of writing this article, both Alcaraz and Tiafoe had won a set apiece. However, the Spaniard broke Tiafoe’s serve early in the third set to gain an upper hand in the match.
