The World’s No.1 Novak Djokovic has made Serbia proud quite a few times. Djokovic has single-handedly mastered the ins and outs of tennis. Something that only a few people could ever do in the history of tennis. However, it seems like this dominance also brings a few negative aspects that are rarely spoken about.
Renowned Serbian journalist, Nebojsa Viskovic recently shared an interesting insight on this issue. Viskovic joined the ATP Tennis Radio podcast to talk about a lot of things. However, his opinion about Djokovic became the highlight of the podcast.

Tennis enthusiasts worldwide celebrate Djokovic’s unparalleled mastery on the court. Yet the shadow of his dominance conceals a more nuanced narrative in Serbian tennis. In the midst of Djokovic’s stellar season renowned Serbian journalist Viskovic unveils a perspective that is not much seen. Viskovic’s candid commentary sheds light on the underappreciated struggles faced by other Serbian players.
Viskovic’s words echo a sentiment felt deeply within the tennis community. He stated: “There’s also some negative sides, because he (Djokovic) stepped the bar so high. ow, it’s really hard for people to realize how hard it is to be, you know, in, for example, Serbia had a couple of months ago, maybe one year ago, five top 50 players.”
He pointed out that Djokovic’s extraordinary achievements have inadvertently raised the bar quite high. The collective tennis prowess of Serbia is followed by multiple players ranking within the top 50 and still goes overlooked.
Viskovic noted: “I don’t know Lajovic.” This referenced Dusan Lajovic, who currently sits at 32nd in the world rankings. The acknowledgment of Lajovic’s impressive standing is juxtaposed with the reality that casual fans may only recognize Djokovic. Viskovic encapsulated the sentiment shared by many Serbian players.

Alcaraz’s quest in Djokovic’s shadow
As Djokovic’s brilliance dazzles the tennis world, the spotlight inadvertently neglects emerging talents like Carlos Alcaraz. His remarkable performances are often eclipsed by the Serbian maestro. Alcaraz is a mere 20-year-old who showcased commendable skills on the court.
Yet his achievements struggle to secure the recognition they deserve in the towering presence of Djokovic. Despite Alcaraz’s stellar plays, the narrative often circles back to Djokovic. This leaves the young Spaniard somewhat obscured in the tennis narrative.
