The 25-year-old Greek tennis player, Stefanos Tsitsipas has been on a roller coaster ride this year. After featuring in the finals of the Australian Open earlier this year, he has failed to leave a mark on the bigger stages. In 2019 he created a record after becoming the youngest winner of the season-ending championship. But 4 years later ironically he had to withdraw his name from the competition which he called ‘bigger than a Grand Slam.’ Jim Courier recently dissected Tsitsipas’ emotional turmoils throughout the season. Let’s see what the 53-year-old former American world number 1 has to say on the Greek.

Stefanos Tsitsipas was put in the same group with Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, and Holger Rune. He had lost the first match against Sinner and in the second he was up against the number 8 from Denmark. But the match only lasted for about 14 minutes as Tsitsipas had to pull out of the match due to a back injury.

4 major singles title holder, Jim Courier recently came to the Tennis Channel Inside podcast and pointed out the physical and emotional turmoils that Tsitsipas had this season. The International Tennis Hall of Famer however, didn’t forget to mention that the 25YO will learn from the troubles he had this season and become more mature next year. Here’s what he said in the podcast, to sum up Tsitsipas’ season this year.

A year of growth is the way that I would look kind of pinpoint this one for Stef (Tsitsipas). He went through a lot this year, you know, he seemingly fell in love publicly for the first time. He got rid of his father as a coach for a minute and brought in Mark Philippoussis. And then that didn’t seem to pan out and he went back to Dad. He won a doubles title with his brother, which was a magical moment. So there were a lot of emotional highs and lows here, the Australian Open, was certainly a great start to the season.”  said Jim Courier.

He further went on to add, “And then he had some dips from a playing standpoint. And this is disappointing to see him have to suffer physically and not be able to finish the year strong, but his assets are in place. He’s got a great game. He’s incredible athletes.

Courier returns the favor to Stefanos Tsitsipas

The legend of American tennis, Jim Courier recently defended the decision of Tsitsipas to play his second match at the group stage despite suffering from back pain. Courier had his back saying that the Greek is not so selfish and perhaps he would have loved the most to continue. But the court in Turin is lightning fast and it can be tough to adjust with the pace even for the fittest on the court.
