As the 2023 Davis Cup concluded, fans of the tournament are already looking forward to the next one. While Italy is celebrating its second Davis Cup title, the tournament is not being seen in a great light at the moment. Not long after Italy won, the International Tennis Federation announced a wildcard for a country that lost in the quarterfinals, making fans angry at the favoritism.

The ITF is not popular with fans at the moment as they made another decision that didn’t sit well with the fans. Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz have the chance to play in the 2024 Olympics as regulations have been lifted for them. This decision along with the previous one also caused fans to be outraged.

The ITF is one of the tennis regulating bodies based out of London that manages several championships. They are responsible for tournaments such as the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup, which shows their prominence in the tennis world. Despite their status, they are being hounded by fans for giving Great Britain a wildcard for the tournament next year.

This is the third time Great Britain has received a wildcard in five years. When the news was shared, it caused many tennis fans to scratch their heads as they tried to wrap their head around the situation.

One user wondered if there was any explanation for the ‘favoritism’ shown to Great Britain.

Another user said that it stinks to see GB qualify for the Davis Cup once again. They further said that the championship can’t be taken seriously if such awkward questions are being asked, and one has to question the rationale behind it.

One user simply said that the situation was absolute rubbish.

A native of Great Britain said that it was embarrassing that they had to keep buying their way into the Davis Cup.

One user shared several clown emojis and said “MAFIA” aiming to imply that GB has developed a mafia-like structure for the cup’s selection.

Great Britain, getting a wildcard entry for the 2024 Davis Cup is not the only thing that has got the tennis fans angry at the ITF. Two Spanish players received entry into the Olympics despite not meeting the criteria, which also served to irritate the tennis world.

Spaniard entry in the Olympics angers fans

To compete in the Summer Olympics, a player must be a member of a team that competes in the Davis Cup final and be present at the tournament at least twice within an Olympic cycle. Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz did not meet the criteria, but the ITF relaxed the restriction for them. The two will be able to play in the 2024 Summer Olympics despite their absence from the Davis Cup.

Fans were angry and called out the bias for the two players, as there has not been an explanation for it. Many fans wondered why the rules changed for them, the same way Great Britain received entry into the Davis Cup group stage in 2024. The answers to these questions have not been revealed yet.
