John McEnroe, the retired American tennis player, was renowned for his on-court antics, more than his seven Grand Slam titles. Recently, the legend shared his views on this era’s controversial tennis player, Nick Kyrgios. More often than not, it’s Kyrgios’ actions and on-court behavior that show him making the front page, rather than his performances on the court.


Since turning professional in 2012, the Australian has given tennis fans some of the sport’s most exciting and controversial moments. Nick Kyrgios has the potential to be as good as anyone on the ATP Tour. However, his temper has often got the better of him on numerous occasions.

McEnroe shares his views on the current generation players

John McEnroe has won seven Grand Slam titles, including four at the US Open and three at Wimbledon. Despite his incredible victories, the player is well remembered for his outbursts and antics. When it comes to racquet smashing, the Aussie Nick Kyrgios is the true heir to John McEnroe as the new bad boy in tennis.

In an exclusive interview, McEnroe said, “And I know something about meltdowns, my experience, and I’ve seen a couple of players, obviously Nick Kyrgios comes to mind having meltdowns on a pretty regular basis.” The seven-time Grand Slam champion goes on to say that Kyrgios is great for the sport as it attracts new followers.

He further added, “but for the most part, tennis players are incredibly well-behaved, maybe too well-behaved in my book.” He also asserted, “I’d like to see a little bit more explosive temper see the emotions, wear it on their sleeve, there’s a handful of people you see that but I just saw someone win Wimbledon on the girl’s side who didn’t show any emotion, so I don’t know if any of us wanna see that.

McEnroe is no stranger to controversial moments. As an active player, he was known for his hot-headed personality, just like Kyrgios. With his infamous “You cannot be serious” moment coming at the 1981 Wimbledon Championships.

Nick Kyrgios battling painful injuries

Just when it looked like Kyrgios might add another title to his season tally, the Australian tennis star has suffered an injury. He recently spoke about his knee problem that forced him out of the Japan Open. Nick Kyrgios believes he didn’t take enough free time to recover from his knee injury.

This isn’t the first time he’s had to pull out of a tournament due to an injury. He had also retired from the Atlanta Open, citing his injuries. He ended the 2021 season early due to a left hamstring inflammation.
