For much of her career, Coco Gauff received coaching from her father, who played Basketball during his college years. The coaching role was eventually handed over to Pere Riba, but Corey Gauff never left his daughter’s side. Sitting in the player’s box during her final, Corey certainly had a million thoughts running through his mind. Recently, Riba sat for an exclusive with EssentiallySports, where he talked about the importance of her father being there for her during the final.

Her father has always been by her side throughout each step. Corey witnessed his daughter come from the junior tour to winning a grand slam, which made him shed tears. Witnessing an adorable change in her father, Coco decided to embarrass him in her post-match speech.

Pere Riba and Brad Gilbert, former coach of Andre Agassi, took over coaching for Coco Gauff after her French Open stint ended. Riba and Gilbert were the ones who knew more about tennis, but they did not sideline Coco’s father, who had coached her since she was a child.

In an exclusive with Essentially Sports, Riba explained the importance of Corey Gauff in the coaching team.

We created routines, and things are working well. It was a situation of one routine we were bringing for a long time was working, and just wanted to continue that routine. Don’t change the things when things are working well. Dad is the person that is leading the team, is the most important person for Coco that is creating all the atmosphere, Corey. He is the most important guy, and the success of Coco is because Corey is there.”

The decision to not change responsibilities of Corey worked well in their favor as Gauff won her first slam in blazing fashion. Noting his importance, Coco couldn’t miss the chance to embarrass her father in her speech.

Adorable moment between father and daughter

After concluding her battle against Aryna Sabalenka, the 19-year-old American sensation was on cloud nine. When she gave her post-match speech, she decided to thank her parents for their efforts for her. She then said that it was the first time she had seen her dad cry. At this point, he signaled her to cut her speech, and the arena launched into laughter.
