In an exclusive interview with EssentiallySports, Thomas Drouet, who used to practice with Nadal, shared why the French public adores the tennis star. He suggested that there’s a statue of Nadal in France where he is portrayed as a determined fighter, something the French really respect. Winning 14 times in France makes the crowd feel like he’s part of their home. Drouet explains it’s not just about his tennis skills, it’s also because Nadal is a genuinely nice person.

He’s known for working hard, and showing respect to everyone, from players to staff. Nadal’s friendly gestures, like saying hello to everyone in the locker room, create a lasting impression. According to Drouet, Nadal’s reputation as a great person, not just a player, will always be cherished in the hearts of the French people.

“His statue just represents the guy, like an iron guy with always the fighting spirit. And I think this is what we respect a lot in France. Okay, you want 14 times he feels at home, the crowd is full for him. But also with his tenacity, the work he puts in, the respect he gives to the player, to the crowd, even to the guys in the locker room, everybody likes him also, not because he’s a great player,” said Thomas while talking about the personality that Rafael Nadal is.

“They love him because he’s a great person. And he’s not acting. I see him. He’s saying hello to everybody in the locker. To the guy who gave the sandwich, to the water, to the guy who booked the training. He arrives, say hello, polite to everyone. And I think that creates this image, you know? And yeah, I truly believe that his aura will stay forever in the French hearts,” he further continued.

Thus, it is not only due to his epic gameplay that people adore Rafael Nadal. Having dominated the global stage for almost 2 decades, the Spaniard also made sure that he greeted everyone with love.
