This year has been a topsy-turvy journey for Holger Rune. The Danish tennis star has struggled to perform on the court, with most of his tournament results marked by early-round exits, except for a few. Given the fact that he failed to have a consistent coach in his corner since the beginning of the year, could be one of the crucial factors for his short runs. However, when things were about to set in the right motion with Patrick Mouratoglou as his coach, there came another rumor to quash the ease of Rune’s fans.
It seems that the Danish tennis star is looking for something particular to fire up his journey. In February, he parted ways with the six-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker to get together with Serena Williams’ ex coach Mouratoglou. The French coach is credited for guiding Serena Williams towards the record-breaking 23 Grand Slam titles, from 2012 to 2022. However, recently Boris Becker fired up the rumors with his recent tweet about the partnership of Rune and Mouratoglou:
Quick question: I see @pmouratoglou in London but NOT with @holgerrune2003 at @Wimbledon …they are still working together?!?

At the cusp of Wimbledon, every coach is right beside their protégé, to ensure no stone is left unturned as they begin their campaign. In addition, to avoid burnout before the start of the tournament. However, Mouratoglou’s presence in London, and not beside Rune, certainly raises questions about their partnership. More so, Boris Becker highlighting the fact puts him into the spotlight for a reunion with the World No.15. But above all, the question of consistency plagues the mind of tennis fans, as this would be the 3rd coach change in a span of just 6 months.
Boris Becker left the camp Rune in February 2024, after announcing their partnership just four months before. Moreover, this news surprised tennis fans, as just a week before splitting with the Hall of Famer Becker, Rune parted ways with his second coach, Severin Luthi. And welcomed Williams’ ex-coach to guide him. However, since then Rune has slipped from being World No.7 to World No.15, as he struggles to find his form.

Coach change could happen due to any reasons, disagreement over issues, unsatisfying results, or just to get different opinions, among others. It’s a subjective issue, between the player and a coach. However, tennis fans would be eager to jump into the speculation based on Rune’s on-court performance and, of course, controversies until now.

Rune played one final till now, at the beginning of the year, Brisbane international, and since then he has risen to the occasion but suffered semi-final exits in some. However, he is yet to regain his form to propel him towards Grand Slam finals. But, his image of a ‘bad boy’ shadows the racquet on the court. Though unapologetic about it at the Madrid Open, he said, “I’m not bad, I’ve never had problems with anyone. I’m just someone who empathizes with the fight, I get excited. Sometimes I go a little too far.”
This leaves fans with a wide array of reason to worry about. Though his performance might alleviate all the doubts or re-enforce them, a coach can certainly support him through it all!
