Is Jannik Sinner truly the best, or are his rivals just not stepping up their game?

Jannik Sinner has carried his amazing form to the ATP Finals. Ever since the tournament began earlier this week, the World No.1 has proved his consistency in both of his group matches. He did it against Alex de Minaur and then while playing Taylor Fritz too. The Fox’s supreme form has now sparked a huge reaction from an Italian legend and former ATP pro. He believes Sinner is unquestionably the top player in the world of tennis right now.

For those who failed to keep track of scores, Jannik Sinner won his maiden encounter of the event 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets against Minaur. Despite his best efforts, the Aussie had no answers to the Fox’s agility, quick movement, and unmatched intensity on the court. It was the same case against Fritz as well. The American player failed to pose any serious threat to the two-time Grand Slam champion.

Sinner defeated Fritz easily with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets. With these two victories, he’s maintained his stunning record in this season. So far, he’s won 67 out of the 73 ATP matches this year – a mind-boggling stat! Reflecting on Sinner’s indomitable aura on the court, former World No.1 Adriano Panatta shared his honest thoughts on what really makes the 23-year-old the best among the rest.

In an interaction with Tuttosport, dated November 13, he mentioned that Jannik Sinner’s competitors are aware that they can defeat him. Yet, he eventually succeeds to reign supreme over them. “Everyone knows how to beat Sinner, everyone is convinced of it but in the end, no one succeeds,” he said. Giving the example of Sinner’s match with Fritz, he said, “It was a good match, Fritz fought, but in the end, it ended 6-4, 6-4. And this score is not from a great match but it is the synthesis of a domination.”

Adding further, he said that “at certain levels, the matches are decided on two/three points but Sinner always wins those.” According to Panatta, most of the Sinner’s opponents don’t really know how to seize the crucial moments when playing against him. They can match him shot for shot for certain periods of the match, but when it comes to the key moments, it’s always the World No. 1 who keeps his nerves and that’s what makes him as good as he is. “And instead in the end Jannik wins, it is now a constant,” Panatta concluded.

As of now, Sinner’s excellent form and his awareness of the sport while playing against different players seem to be unparalleled. Probably that’s the reason why another former ATP pro and Novak Djokovic’s ex-coach thinks he’s the best at the moment.

While talking to Tennis Majors about Sinner and Alcaraz, in an inteview dated November 5th, former Croatian player Ivanisevic said, “They’re different players. But when they are both at their best, I feel that Sinner is better. He is more consistent throughout the match, whether Alcaraz can go from hitting amazing shots to some easy errors. This year, Carlos had a few losses I couldn’t explain… If we move Novak out of the equation, they will dominate, they are way above anyone else on the Tour.”

Similarly, tennis legend Andre Agassi also admires Jannik a lot, compared to any of his contemporaries.
