Is Cameron Norrie the bad boy of tennis, or just misunderstood in his fiery celebrations?

Britain’s Cameron Norrie is having a hard time with his luck. He might win his recent match but his attitude has caused him trouble again. The Briton is in Germany for a tournament and stealing all the spotlights, but not for a good reason. Now, despite moving to the next round, the fraternity seems quite unpleased. So, what did he do again?

Norrie’s recent on-court gesture again landed him in trouble. He was playing in the 2024 Moselle Open’s Round of 32 against Roberto Carballes Baena and defeated the Spanish 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. After winning the match, Norrie went toward Baena and shook his hand. After that, he said “Vamos” to his opponent and then went to shake the umpire’s hand. This gesture somehow disappointed Baena and he said, “You said Vamos twice on my face. What are you doing? What are you doing Cameron?” As he said these words, Baena looked visibly disappointed.

The Briton’s behavior divided the internet with some opposing his behavior as disrespectful. One tennis fan tweeted, “Norrie was shouting vamos in his face multiple times. He isn’t even Spanish. You won the match and then you say you were playing badly, gaslighting much. He gets under the skin of many players. Remember the Nole match last year in Rome.”

Norrie’s followers retweeted addressing the issue. “Khachanov, Rublev, De Minaur (he does speak Spanish), Djokovic all have said VAMOS on the court after winning points. Is Spanish their 1st language? No,” tweeted a person. His statements tried to focus on the possibility that Norrie was probably simply celebrating his victory. His words were probably the result of his extreme excitement after such an intense match.

Cameron Norrie’s behavior has brought back memories of his match against Djokovic. He went under severe criticisms when the Serb made some serious accusations against the player’s on-court attitude. Djokovic highlighted Norrie’s unsportsmanlike attitude but with a twit.

Novak Djokovic criticized Cameron Norrie’s attitude in the 2024 Italian Open

Norrie played against Djokovic in R16 of the Italian Open where he was defeated by the Serb 6-3, 6-4. During the second set of their match, Norrie accidentally hit Djokovic’s foot when the Serb turned around and walked towards the baseline finishing the point with an overhead. The Briton immediately issued an apology with a hand up but it didn’t work well with the Serbian legend. After the match, in the press conference, Djokovic revealed more things about Norrie’s attitude which caused severe criticism.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Cameron Norrie the bad boy of tennis, or just misunderstood in his fiery celebrations?

Have an interesting take?

From the very beginning, I don’t know, he was doing all the things that were allowed, He’s allowed to take a medical timeout. He’s allowed to hit a player. He’s allowed to say ‘c’mon’ in the face more or less every single point from basically the first game. Those are the things that we players know in the locker room it’s not fair play, it’s not how we treat each other. But, again, it’s allowed, so …” said the Serb. His words echoed the sarcasm about how Norrie disrespected the game.

Given Norrie hasn’t spoken about his recent behavior in the media, it is hard to say about whether he had an intention behind his cheer. What do you think?
