In the early days of his tennis career, Novak Djokovic used to have a lot of fun imitating other players. He started doing this when he was just six years old, taking the best shots or unique characteristics of players he looked up to. However, as he grew and started playing professionally.
He noticed that some of his fellow players didn’t like it. Even though he wasn’t trying to make them upset, he realized it was bothering them. So, Djokovic decided to stop the mimicry, not because he wanted people to like him more, but because he wanted to have good relationships with his rivals and be respectful towards them.
“I tried to take the best shot or a certain characteristic unique to them and play with that. That’s where it started and I kept doing it when I reached the big stage. People thought I’m doing this because I want to be liked. That wasn’t the case. I did them because I enjoyed doing them. But at a certain moment I stopped because I wanted good relations with my rivals and to be respectful. I noticed how they looked at me and could see they were upset. I thought, “OK, I’m not doing this because I don’t want to piss them off.”” said Djokovic in the interview.
