Roger Federer’s retirement last year took precedence in media coverage of the ATP. The Swiss Maestro publicly said that he would no longer participate in the ATP tour after the Laver Cup. After his final game, his farewell party was set to take place in his hometown, Basel, last year. However, it was delayed as Federer was not ready to bid farewell due to his emotional state. It was rescheduled for this fall, but the farewell ceremony was once again canceled by the Swiss Maestro. Let’s see why.
Federer announced last year about a final farewell ceremony in the tournament, Swiss Indoors Basel, played in his hometown. However, for reasons purely sentimental, the 41-year-old seems to be unable to get through with it yet again.

This year, everyone was getting emotionally ready to watch the farewell ceremony. But the Mighty Federer once again said that no such ceremony will take place. Basel was the place where Federer first started working as a ball boy and learned the basics of the game to become one of the most legendary tennis players that the world has ever set eyes on.
In an interview with BZBasel, the Swiss Maestro said, “I don’t think I could do it emotionally.” He further elaborated on the mindset that stopped him from closing the chapter with a fairy tale ending.
“The longer I think back, to the time when my mother worked in the accreditation office and I was a ball boy, to 2019, when I won my last tournament in Basel, the more I get the feeling that it was like was in fairy tales.”

As the farewell ceremony of the Swiss Maestro was postponed last year, Swiss fans were ready to bid him a proper farewell this year. However, the Swiss Maestro was not emotionally ready to say goodbye to his tennis career in his hometown. Having won the Basel Open 10 times between 2006 and 2019, Federer felt quite emotional and withdrew from having the ceremony.
While Federer played in the Swiss Indoors in 2019 for the last time, he still maintains a good relationship with the Old Boys Club. He enrolled for coaching at the club at the age of eight. He was taught by Sepply Kacovsky, who taught the future Maestro till he was 10 and helped him with his desire to win.
