In an old conference call with Bleacher Report, the American tennis legend made some strong assertions about outshining Roger Federer in his prime. Ever since he made his debut on the Centre Court, the Swiss tennis Maestro managed to remain a dominating force throughout his illustrious journey. With his powerful serves and poise, the former tennis ace outclassed some of the greatest figures on the men’s circuit.
However, despite witnessing those remarkable triumphs, Pete Sampras once claimed that he could’ve defeated Federer on his favorite surface. In the process, the former American tennis player highlighted some of the flaws in the 20 singles Grand Slam champion’s playing style and attitude. He stated that Federer was never scared of any big serves and volleys on the Center Court.
Sampras added that there was hardly any player who put any sort of pressure on the Swiss tennis legend during their grass-court encounters. However, the Hall of Famer said his prime game would’ve definitely made the 8-time Wimbledon champion a little bit uncomfortable. Sampras also revealed his strategy of putting pressure on Federer’s backhand in order to beat him.
While questioning himself about outclassing Federer in his prime, the 14 singles Grand Slam champion asserted that he was an unbeatable force on the men’s circuit. Sampras said, “I don’t think anyone could beat me in my prime on grass. I felt unbeatable in the mid 90s.”
