Austrian tennis star, Dominic Thiem, has been out of the tennis court for the most part of last year. Many fans missed seeing him perform on the biggest stage, along with many ATP tournaments. All because of a wrist injury that he suffered during June 2021.

Since the injury, Thiem hasn’t played a single competitive match on the tour. Thiem was hopeful to make it to this year’s Australian Open, however, he had to pull out in December, as he was not completely healed from the injury. Recently, Thiem’s father, trainer, and manager, Wolfgang Thiem, gave an update about the possible return date of the Austrian tennis player.

Before the injury happened, Dominic Thiem was in fine form. The Austrian won his first-ever Grand Slam at the US Open 2020 by beating Alexander Zverev in the final. He reached his career-high ranking-3 in March 2021 and looked all set to compete for more Grand Slam titles. However, the injury came at a terrible time, as the momentum was picking up.

His father, Wolfgang Thiem, recently provided an update about the possible return date and tournament for the champion player. According to him, Thiem could possibly return in March at the Indian Wells Masters tournament.

“Domi’s doing well, the wrist is fine. But even if everything has healed well, the risk of a possible overload is still present. He had a serious injury, not everything works again from one day to the next. […] He should be fully competitive again in IW mid-March,” Thiem’s father said

2021 was not a great year for the Austrian tennis player and he would like to bounce back strongly in 2022. One setback already happened when he pulled out of the Australian Open. However, his return at the Indian Wells will bring back some sweet memories from 2019, where he beat Roger Federer in the final to win it all.

Undoubtedly, Thiem has one of the best one-handed backhands on the tour at the moment. Many tennis fans missed seeing those famous single-handed down-the-line shots. Hopefully, the Austrian will get back to his previous best and take part in the rest of the Grand Slam tournaments.
