Austrian star player Dominic Thiem, who recently opted out of Mubadala World Tennis Championships, has decided to return to his country after a training session in Dubai.
Thiem took to Twitter to post the message.
“After speaking to my team, we have decided to return to Austria, instead of flying directly to Australia. Unfortunately, I caught a cold while in Dubai and was unable to practice last week”.

Looking at Thiem’s message, it’s evident that the 2020 US Open champion is still unsure about his journey to Australia. Initially, Thiem decided to play a warm-up tournament ahead of the ‘happy slam’. But, it appears that the Austrian is yet to be declared fully match-fit.
“I will therefore not be in the physical condition required to be able to play the ATP Cup and Sydney ATP 250. After not competing for the last 6 months I can’t take the risk of coming back too soon picking up a further injury”, Thiem wrote in his message on Twitter.
However, the Austrian remained hopeful of a possible return to tennis in Melbourne. It has been a disappointing season for Dominic Thiem as he couldn’t play to his potential in the first half of the ATP season.

At the inaugural Mallorca Championships this year, Thiem injured his wrist while attempting a forehand drive against Adrian Mannarino. What followed was the Austrian pulling out of the tournaments one after the other and putting an end to his season.
Even though Thiem gave hope for his fans initially by promising to play the exhibition event in Abu Dhabi, he announced his withdrawal few days before the start of the event.

As how things stand at the moment, it will not be a surprise if Dominic Thiem decides to pull out of the Australian Open and focus on making a comeback in the European clay-court swing.
