Ever since turning professional in the year 2013, German ATP star Alexander Zverev showed glimpses of his exceptional talent with the tennis racket. In no time, he caught the attention of experts and fans alike, thanks to his impressive skills on the tennis court. His tally of 19 ATP title victories is only second to Daniil Medvedev‘s 20 among all players born since 1990. Having said that, the 26-year-old’s run of form this season hasn’t been satisfactory at all.

The German’s poor display on the court this year certainly does not reflect his talent as a player. However, after a disappointing statistic started doing the rounds, the reasons for concerns are mounting up, to say the least.

Concerns pile up as shocking Alexander Zverev statistic comes to light

Currently placed at number 19 in the ATP rankings, Zverev’s latest competitive appearance ended in the quarter-finals, when Russia’s Andrey Rublev outclassed him 6-2, 6-3 at the Swedish Open in Bastad on Friday. This defeat also brought to light a staggering statistic involving the 26-year-old German.

Alexander Zverev now has eight losses and zero victories against top 10 opponents this season, which is already at par with the most defeats he suffered at the hands of top 10 ATP players in an entire calendar year (2021) in his career. With a significant part of the season yet to be played, including the US Open, this is indeed a concerning statistic for Zverev.

The former world number 2 had a disappointing run at the recently concluded Wimbledon as well. He was defeated in the 3rd round by Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in straight sets. It is important to note that Zverev suffered a severe injury during the French Open last year that sidelined him for the latter part of the season.

The ankle injury that derailed Zverev’s momentum

Alexander Zverev squared off against the King of Clay Rafael Nadal in a blockbuster Roland Garros semifinal last year. Zverev went toe-to-toe against the Spanish legend in his own backyard. Although he lost the first set 7-6(8) after squandering a set point, he kept up the tempo and caused problems for Nadal.

However, in an unfortunate turn of events, Zverev twisted his ankle as he fell to the ground in excruciating pain during the business end of the second set, as the score was tied 6-6. Zverev, then ranked number 3 in the world, was escorted out of the arena in a wheelchair as he was forced to retire from the match.

He suffered multiple ligament tears and had to undergo surgery that kept him out of action for months to come. Even after successfully recovering from the injury, it is clear that Zverev isn’t yet back to his best, as his record against the top 10 players this year indicates.
