The Nottingham Open ATP Challenger event was recently met with considerable criticism from Abdullah Shelbayh, an alumnus of the renowned Rafael Nadal Academy. Shelbayh blasted tournament officials for their “utterly deplorable” management of court conditions during his match against Joris De Loore. On his Instagram story, he denounced the officials for hastily changing the court surface from grass to hard court.

Shelbayh recounted the episode, which happened during his second-qualifying-round duel against Joris De Loore. After its commencement for an hour and a half on the outdoor grass court, the competition was suspended due to torrential downpour.

The Rafael Nadal Academy student accused the tournament directors and umpires of a lack of attentiveness. He shared that the authorities didn’t wait for the rain to subside and the grasscourt to become playable once more. Despite the protests of Shelbayh, the tournament directors and umpires held firm to their decision, causing more exasperation for the contestant. Shelbayh’s Instagram stories shone a light on the blatant inequity in enforcing penalties. The stark disparity in accountability fosters a sense of injustice and erodes the athletes’ faith in the tournament organizers.
