It wouldn’t be wrong to say that there are some people who are born to do certain things. The same can be said for the German tennis legend Boris Becker and his love for the game of tennis. The 6-time grand slam winner was one of the popular tennis stars during his heydays in the late 1980s. Perhaps this is why the tennis world was so shocked and saddened when Becker was sentenced to 2 and a half years in prison by UK courts last year in a bankruptcy fraud case. He was released 8 months later and deported to Germany. However, his recent appearance at the ATP Mallorca Championships showed that one can take Boris Becker out of tennis but can never take tennis out of Boris Becker!

Boris Becker expresses a desire to play tennis again

The ATP Mallorca Championships began last Saturday with a grand opening ceremony at the Mallorca Country Club in Santa Ponsa. Becker attended the event as one of the guests of honor, along with his girlfriend, Lilian de Carvalho. The German great couldn’t resist the temptation of stepping onto the tennis court for one more time.

As reported by Majorca Daily Bulletin, Becker wished he could get back on the tennis court again and showered praises on the island of Mallorca. Oh yes, I?m itching… When I see this Wimbledon grass, I would really like to pick up a tennis racket and play. But those days are gone. But I?m so positively surprised that a grass tournament is possible in Mallorca, the conditions are great… It?s broadcast all over the world, it?s priceless advertising for Mallorca”, he said.

The sight of the lush green grass courts of Mallorca revived the passion for tennis inside a nostalgic Becker. After all, his camaraderie with this surface is iconic – 3 of his 6 grand slam victories came at Wimbledon. Watching Becker beside a tennis court is a much more familiar sight for the fans, which wasn’t necessarily the case in the past few years due to his unfortunate prison sentence.

A legend’s fall from grace

Boris Becker retired as a tennis player in June 1999 and became a commentator and media personality. The dark period of his life was yet to come. After once being charged with tax evasion in Germany in 2002, Becker declared bankruptcy in 2017 in the UK. However, he was sentenced to 30 months in prison for hiding assets and loans worth millions and convicted under the Insolvency Act in April 2022. He was released early, having served 8 months of his time, and deported back to Germany. All this created a huge dent in his public image – Becker’s fall from grace was complete.

Having said that, it is a pleasant sight to see Boris Becker putting the past behind him and making the headlines for events related to the tennis court. No matter what, millions of his fans will remember him as the gutsy 17-year-old who shocked the world by becoming the youngest-ever Wimbledon men’s singles champion in 1985.
