Under the tutelage of Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill, his two coaches, Jannik Sinner has now reached the championship match of the Australian Open. Prior to teaming up with his current coaches, the young Italian tennis star was being guided by his compatriot Riccardo Piatti, who has coached some of the big names, including Novak Djokovic, Ivan Ljubičić, Richard Gasquet, and Milos Raonic. However, despite experiencing breakthroughs under his mentorship, Jannik previously made a controversial decision to part ways with the Italian tennis coach.

Riccardo Piatti’s academy was where the tennis sensation received his early training. But in February 2022, the Italian ATP superstar announced a shock split from Piatti, who guided him to his first ATP title and a spot in the top-10 rankings on the men’s tour. Reminiscing about his decision to end his long-term partnership, Jannik recently opened up about how he “threw himself into the fire.”

Jannik Sinner gets real about his split from Riccardo Piatti

Ahead of his championship game at the Australian Open, the renowned tennis journalist Quentin Moynet recently brought to light the Italian player’s candid comments about his decision to part ways with Riccardo Piatti. While mentioning a popular ‘expression’ in Italian, Jannik Sinner recently opened up about how he doesn’t ‘regret’ anything.

The young ATP superstar said, “When I left Riccardo (Piatti)… In Italian, we have an expression: “I threw myself into the fire.” Head first! When I decide something I go all in. I don’t regret anything. My only regret is when I’m not happy.” Piatti, on the other hand, also revealed that he was ‘glad’ that he decided to end their long-term partnership, as he had his own philosophy and methods.

In an interview with RMC Info, the Italian coach said, “I’m glad he made that decision. I have my philosophy, my methods. If anyone wants to stay here, they must submit to my methods. At 20, you may want to find new paths, it’s part of life.”  He also said that Jannik was like a ‘part of his family.’ While talking about how he has his own ‘methods,’ Piatti also said candidly that everyone under his tutelage must follow them. He stated, “Sometimes kids decide to go study abroad and then they leave. But if they stay, they must follow my methods.”
