The year 2022 may probably go down in history as one of the saddest ones for the tennis world. It saw two of the most decorated players in the sport, Serena Williams and Roger Federer calling time on their illustrious careers. The American tennis legend retired after the US Open while Federer called it quits after the Laver Cup. Hours ago, the official trailer of Federer’s new documentary titled ‘Federer: Twelve Final Days’ was released in which John McEnroe made a saddening revelation about the Swiss maestro’s retirement.

The documentary will be released on Amazon Prime Video and its trailer has been launched. In the trailer, American tennis legend, McEnroe, can be heard saying, “Losing someone of Roger’s magnitude will be tough.”

McEnroe was the captain of the Team World that defeated Federer’s Team Europe in the Swiss maestro’s final tournament. The American legend’s statement still holds true, with Federer leaving a massive void after his retirement. Back in 2022, McEnroe only had words of praise for Federer when he sent a personal message to him, “You’re obviously a class act. I’ve loved watching you play and commentating your matches has been a privilege. You are the most beautiful player that I’ve ever seen on a tennis court. And I idolized Rod Laver – so that tells you something.”

The retired American player couldn’t end the message without expressing his gratitude to the Swiss maestro for all he had done for tennis. “Thank you for everything you’ve done. That’s all I can say. Your absolute love of the game, it rubs off on all of us. And I’ve got goosebumps just feeling that because it’s been a pleasure to watch you these last 20 years.”

Two years since then, and fans still miss Federer dearly. While this upcoming documentary will no doubt stir up some emotions, many still hold out hope for a comeback.

Will Roger Federer make a surprise comeback?

The Swiss maestro is enjoying his post-retirement life by spending quality time with his family while focusing on his business ventures. Additionally, Federer also suffered with knee problems toward the end of his career, which makes a potential comeback unlikely.

During an interview, Federer opened up if he wished to return to playing tennis competitively. He mentioned, “I’m really relieved, if that makes any sense. I mean, the last few years have been tough with my knee.”

Further, he went on to add, “You could feel the end coming closer. So when it’s all said and done and you’re over the line and you’re retired officially, you take a deep breath and you’re like, ‘Wow, okay, that was good.’”

With this, Federer quashed any chances of him returning back to action. While Federer has picked up the racket again for charity purposes, he is not returning to the sport as a player. However, his involvement in the sport in any other capacity like a coach cannot be ruled out.
