Coaching and parenting are two different things. It’s not often that we see parents coaching their children in professional tennis. Of course, we have exceptions in Venus and Serena Williams and Stefanos Tsitsipas. But, it’s far from a common phenomenon, especially when the parents are renowned tennis greats themselves.

Only a few tennis stars have had the luxury to be more successful than Pete Sampras. The 14-time major winner established his own kingdom at Wimbledon and ruled the sport for more than a decade. But, do these accolades help Pete’s children acknowledge him as the best coach?

Over the years we have noticed that athletes’ children often opt to play the same sport their parents did. Almost like they are blessed with particular sporting genes. They also benefit from the first-hand experience and opinions provided by the parents. But, it is not quite the case with all children, especially Sampras’ younger son.

In Pete Bodo’s Book, ‘Pete Sampras: Greatness Revisited‘, Samparas weighed in on this topic. He said, “If we had a tape of some of these conversations we have had on the court, you would be cracking up. I was working on his serve one time and giving him advice. He was frustrated. He said, ?Dad, you don?t know what you are talking about.? That was hilarious.

Well, Sampras is not the only former tennis player who has opened up about the difficulties of coaching children. As a recently retired tennis icon, he faces the same issue Sampras has faced over the years. In case you are still wondering who the tennis icon is, his name is Roger Federer!

How Roger Federer segregates coaching from fatherhood

However, Federer already subtly revealed that he wouldn’t coach them, citing that a dad’s advice does not go as far as a coach’s. Federer and Sampras were pretty much on the same page here as they agree that fatherhood and coaching are vastly different roles.
