Ben Shelton recently enjoyed a breakthrough Grand Slam campaign under the tutelage of his father and coach, Bryan Shelton. The former University of Florida coach previously decided to take coaching duties for his tennis star son during the grass-court season. After teaming up with his father, the young ATP sensation marked his deepest major run on his home soil, at the US Open, having reached the semifinal round.
However, despite tasting massive success under the mentorship of his current coach, the 21-year-old is likely to split ways according to the renowned tennis analyst, Gill Gross. Emphasizing the father-son coaching relationship, Gross recently compared it to other similar dynamics on the men’s tour.

On his YouTube channel, the popular broadcaster recently compared the American tennis prodigy’s coaching relationship with his father to other similar dynamics, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev. It came after a fan posed a question about the tennis duo getting praised by the public while other players, who are also coached by their fathers, are facing criticism.
The fan asked, “In recent times with Ben Shelton’s rise, I’ve seen people credit his relationship with his dad as a coach. Why does the dynamic work and get praised so much in comparison to other father-son pairings such as Ruud, Zverev, and Tsitsipas?”
According to Gross, what sets them apart from other pairs is the US Open semifinalist’s father’s readiness to hand over the coaching duties to another individual. He said, “It seems like Bryan Shelton is very, very much willing to not be Ben’s coach. Because when Ben first went on tour, Bryan wasn’t the coach, it was Dean Goldfine.”
However, the renowned tennis analyst also opened up about how the American father-son duo could also face criticism similar to the other duos like Tsitsipas and Zverev.

During the honest conversation, the popular broadcaster also commented on the lack of criticism directed at the American duo as compared to other ATP superstars. Gross claimed that if the 21-year-old also experienced a “period of stagnation” like his colleagues, then the father-son coaching relationship would also become a target of backlash from the public.
The tennis analyst went on to say that if the young ATP sensation doesn’t do well on the court, a lot of questions would be directed towards his father, Bryan. He said, “If the results suggest that there is some questioning to be had with Bryan Shelton, the questioning will happen.”
