Carlos Alcaraz is one player who took the world by storm in 2022. He accomplished similar feats this year as he managed to win the Wimbledon against Novak Djokovic. However, following the tournament, he has not been able to recreate similar feats. Many have postulated why that might be happening. Jim Courier, former number 1 and retired professional, also shared his thoughts.

Watching him face difficulties on the indoor courts in the ATP Finals, Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, also shared his thoughts about the weakness of the young Spaniard. Both tennis specialists have shared their points of view, which show Alcaraz still has a lot to work on.

Carlos Alcaraz has shown his fans great tennis this year. He has won two Masters titles and his first grass slam, which raised expectations from him to the skies. However, he fell slightly short in the American hard court season and found himself eliminated in the US Open semifinal. Since then, Alcaraz has not managed to win any titles and even struggles in the ATP Finals.

Many have talked about his weakness. But many seem to agree that Alcaraz does not conserve his energy. Jim Courier added to the voice as he appeared in the Tennis Channel Inside-In podcast.

Courier said, “He plays such a dynamic game, and he’s so eager to get to every ball. And I think that over time, he’ll learn how to manage his energy levels on the court and maybe not put himself in as much peril because he’s so fast twitch because he almost can get every shot out there. Sometimes, he wastes energy. And also, that’s a lot of braking when you’re hitting the corners that can cause damage to your body.”

He further said that his techniques to stay healthy and fresh even after expending so much energy will be seen in the future. Despite the difficulties, he believes that Alcaraz is well-positioned to tackle the challenges ahead of him. While Courier believes that Alcaraz tends to waste energy, Serena Williams’ former coach postulated another reason for his shortcomings.

Mouratoglou discussed the young Spaniard’s game in the latest episode of ‘Eye of the Coach’. He also criticized Alcaraz’s vulnerability on indoor courts, comparing him to Holger Rune on that court. In the episode, he said that the indoor season is very short, and not many players can gain experience in it, depending on where they live.

Alcaraz, being from Spain, likely has less experience in indoor as he has mostly played in outdoor courts. The Spaniard himself has stated that he is finding it difficult to adapt to the indoor courts. Now, as he moves into the third round, he has to adapt quickly or find himself eliminated from the competition.
