Just a day ago, Aussie superstar Nick Kyrgios raised some serious concerns about his participation at the 2025 AO. He has already been out of action for a while, and everyone was desperate to see him in action at his ‘Home Slam.’ Kyrgios shared a post on his IG story on Wednesday, which stated that he had withdrawn from an exhibition event against his friend, Novak Djokovic, due to an abdominal issue. This statement from Kyrgios made the fans curious. Addressing this curiosity, the Aussie recently shared an update on his participation, and guess what? Fans will be ecstatic after hearing this news.
In a previous post, Nick Kyrgios wrote, “Unfortunately won’t be able to play my good friend (Djokovic) this Thursday as I’ve had an ultrasound on my abdominal and have a grade 1 strain. Will be resting and doing everything I can to be OK by the Aus Open.” After that, we saw him arriving at the Melbourne airport. Shortly, after his arrival, he gave an interview with the 7news. In that interview, he was asked to reflect a bit about his participation at the 2025 AO.
In reply to that, he said, “I’ve still got five days up my sleeve so I probably won’t serve for the next couple of days. I’ve got a couple of practices scheduled. I’ll do everything I can. It’s not too serious, I’ll just take it day by day and give myself the best chance.” Then a few hours after that interview, Nick Kyrgios comes up with yet another update.

After his first-round defeat to France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Nick Kyrgios said, “I think I almost need a miracle, and I need the stars to align for my wrist to hold up in a Grand Slam for sure.” Now with stars possibly seeming to have already aligned, what do the tennis experts think about his chances in the AO and the 2025 season as a whole?

Tennis experts sharing their thoughts on Nick Kyrgios’ chances in 2025
Nick Kyrgios has been on the main Tour for almost 12 years now, but he has yet to win a major title in his career. He came closer to clinching one at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships but Kyrgios was defeated by Novak Djokovic in the final match. So, shortly after announcing his comeback to the Tour, the Aussie said, “I think the one thing that is now on my target is a Grand Slam. I think that will be the only thing that will shut people up at the end of the day. That’ll be my deep motivation.”
What do the experts think about this? Does he really have a chance at the bigger events in this season? Well, we’ve seen two different takes on this in the last few days. On one side, we’ve seen tennis legends like Mats Wilander say, “If Nick goes out, and he plays his absolute best tennis, and if he wins the Grand Slam, I believe maybe for the first time ever, a single player would have ticked every single box that you can tick…Nick Kyrgios has a chance to do it all.” Even Alex Corretja looked quite optimistic about his chances in the 2025 season. He even claimed that he believes Nick Kyrgios will reach the Top 20 in 2025!

Pat Rafter and Jordan Thompson also refused to write off Nick Kyrgios completely in this season. Not only them, we even saw Serena Williams’ former coach, Rennae Stubbs saying, “If he’s (Kyrgios) fit and he’s hitting the ball well and can move, he can beat anybody!” Amid all these optimisms there are a few individuals who have shared a different opinion on this. For example, previously we saw, Nicolas Mahut say, “Kyrgios hasn’t been back that long and of course, you can dream of the title at the Australian Open, but you have to be realistic.”
Now, Todd Woodbridge has joined Mahut in showcasing his concern about building up “too high expectations.” Recently, in an interview, he said, “Nick has been out of action for a long time, which will be difficult for him. I hope he didn’t have too high expectations because it will take some time to get back to the level he was playing at before.” Nick Kyrgios will face the British tennis player, Jacob Fearnley, in the first round. Kyrgios hasn’t played in his ‘Home Slam’ since 2022! Can the Aussie make a winning start against the debutant?
