A five-set Wimbledon final between the two best players in the world would often lead to a high viewership count. A similar thing happened when Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz locked horns on the Centre Court. In fact, the BBC telecast recorded its highest numbers for the 2023 final since the 2013 Wimbledon final. The Change of Guard storyline was a massive hit for the sport and the viewership numbers speak for it.
However, the final failed to attract as many viewers in the United States. Despite the build-up, ending and intensity involved, no records were breached in America.

The ESPN viewership count was a solid 3.2 million in the USA, but it fell slightly short of the 2019 record. In 2019, when Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic engaged in an iconic five-set final, the viewership count reached 3.4 million. Novak Djokovic was the common player in both the finals, so the difference could be down to a few Roger Federer fans boycotting the final.

On the other hand, BBC saw a ridiculous increment from the 2019 numbers. At its peak, the viewership count reached a whopping 11.2 million on BBC TV. These numbers appear to be massive in front of the 2019 peak which stopped at 9.6 million. In fact, the last year’s Wimbledon final could not cross more than 7.5 million viewers.
A peak of 11.2 million watched Carlos Alcaraz win Wimbledon on BBC TV yesterday.
Those are massive figures. 9.6 million watched Djokovic beat Federer in 2019.
7.5 million saw Djokovic beat Kyrgios last year.

But what could be the reason behind underwhelming ESPN numbers?
Especially when BBC saw skyrocketing numbers, a drop in the viewership count from 2019 does not seem right.

Lack of Americans dominating men’s tennis
Currently, there are two Americans in the top 10 of the ATP rankings and a few more in the top 50. However, when it comes to slams, they underperform. Americans love rooting for local players. Christopher Eubanks’ dream run at Wimbledon attracted plenty of fans in the country to tune into tennis. However, his journey came to an end in the quarter-finals.
American men failing to make it to slam finals could be a major reason behind the lack of interest in the sport in the country. Andy Roddick still remains the last American male slam finalist and the drought has extended to 14 years now.
