The Aussie bad boy has played only one match this year. He had hoped to make a comeback in the Wimbledon Championships, where he had his best major performance ever. Kyrgios reached the finals of the Grass Slam in 2022 after Rafael Nadal was forced to pull out in the semi-final. However, he lost to Novak Djokovic in the finals. Since then, however, it has been downhill for the star.

In the latest update, things seemed to have taken a turn for the worse. The 28-year-old took to his Instagram story to assure his fans that he would reign on the court when he feels better but confessed that, for now, he was heartbroken. Announcing his US Open withdrawal, Kyrgios wrote, “Heartbroken about the US Open ?will be back…..my wrist is not ready yet to compete. But may I remind people I have a protected ranking of 21??when I choose to be back I’ll be back where I belong??.”?After the last Slam, the tour’s year will almost end, and the clock is ticking for the Aussie, even with his protected ranking given his form and fitness.

To reclaim his past glory, he had announced his return to the Stuttgart Open this year. But unfortunately for him, Kyrgios lost his first comeback match to Wu Yibing, and this was the only notable match he played this year. Consequently, he was forced to announce back-to-back withdrawals since Halle Open. In fact, 2o23 has been wrought with injuries that have not allowed the Australian to compete as tenaciously as he would have liked to.

In the Australian Open, Kyrgios withdrew due to a left knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery. Just when his knee got better, Kyrgios’ manager announced that the Aussie could not take part in the French Open as he had lacerated his left foot, an injury that occurred without their knowledge amidst the alleged armed theft of his house and car.

Then came the third major, Wimbledon, where he could not play because of a torn ligament in his left wrist. Before he withdrew, he was asked in a pre-championships press conference if he had missed tennis in the past months. He replied that he didn’t miss the game as he had dreaded the comeback. Instead, he brushed it off, saying it was his job to play the game.
