Today at the French Open, we saw another upset, as the no.14 seed Denis Shapovalov crashed out of the competition in his opening match. Incidentally, he was playing against the Unseeded Danish player Holger Rune and looked like the favorite before the match. Unfortunately, the 19-year-old Danish player completely thrashed the Canadian star in straight sets. Meanwhile, this was a huge victory for Rune. At the same time, Shapovalov is not going to be happy after seeing his error column for the match.

In today’s match, the 23-year-old Canadian tennis star didn’t look in great touch, as he lost the first two sets pretty easily. However, he did make a solid fightback in the third set, as he lost it in a tiebreaker. In this entire match, i.e. three sets, Shapovalov hit a total of 53 unforced errors, which was not a good look for the Canadian player.
19yo Holger Rune upsets 14th seed Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-1, 7-6(4) to reach the second round in Paris.
This is Rune's second top 20 win (also d. Zverev) and first at a slam. Disaster for Shapovalov, who hit 53(!) unforced errors in 3 sets.

Meanwhile, Holger Rune has been making some noises on the ATP tour, as of late. Recently, we saw him practicing with Novak Djokovic at the Serbian Open, and then he won a few challenger tournaments to announce his arrival at the professional level. Today, he didn’t show any nerve at all playing in his second Grand Slam tournament in his career. With this victory, he now got the second top-20 victory of his career and this is the first in a Grand Slam. Notably, he beat Alexander Zverev earlier in Munich, which was the biggest victory of his career.

Shapovalov’s terrible 2022 continues
Certainly, this year has not been great for Denis Shapovalov. The problem is not just his tennis; sometimes his on-court behavior has been inappropriate as well. Earlier, at the Australian Open, he lost his cool during the quarte-final match against Rafael Nadal. In that match, he got into an ugly spat with the chair umpire and Nadal.
Later, he had another argument with the chair umpire at the Indian Wells while playing doubles. Then again, he shouted at the crowd at the Italian Open while arguing with the chair umpire. His on-court antics clearly affected his game, as he’s not going far in tournaments. It will be interesting to see if he can calm himself down and make it further in future tournaments this year. ‘
