Many legends of the game have retired, but their legacy lives on to this date. In tennis, the respective tournament organizers have often acknowledged the legends following their retirement. For instance, Pete Sampras was celebrated at the 2003 US Open after he called it quits. Similarly, Wimbledon paid homage to its eight-time champion, Roger Federer, this year.

Well, the acknowledgment does not quite end here for the Swiss Maestro. For someone with his accolades, it might not end anytime soon. Taking inspiration from Wimbledon, another renowned tennis competition is set to felicitate the 20-time major champion on his illustrious career. But which tennis competition is being referred to here?

The former World No. 1 played his last professional tennis match at last year’s Laver Cup. He paired up with Rafael Nadal for a doubles encounter and ended up on the losing side. The result was the least of the concerns, as the entire tennis fraternity wept over his retirement. Now, Federer is once again set to grace the courts of the Laver Cup, albeit not as a player.

The official Laver Cup account announced that the Swiss Maestro will receive his felicitation at this year’s event in Vancouver. On Friday, September 22, exactly 52 weeks after his retirement, he will be back at the Laver Cup. He will flip the coin for the last match on Friday evening, which will be a doubles encounter. Following the coin flip, Federer will join Jim Courier for an interview.

Federer’s presence, even as a guest, would be huge for the tournament. The Laver Cup will rightfully acknowledge the legacy of Roger Federer. However, by the looks of it, it would be quite different from Wimbledon’s felicitation.

Wimbledon’s tribute different from Laver Cup

Federer was similarly felicitated at Wimbledon, six weeks ago. He sat next to Kate Middleton and his wife Mirka in the Royal Box. Wimbledon presented a brief clip of Federer’s historic achievements at SW19 before he entered the Centre Court. After the completion of the clip, he acknowledged the crowd for the standing ovation and took the seats to watch the first two matches of the day’s play.
