The lead-up to the spitting incident of Nick Kyrgios
Coming fresh as a semifinalist in Stuttgart, and Halle, Nick Kyrgios kicked off his Wimbledon campaign against UK’s Paul Jubb. Playing on Court 3, the two played some high-quality tennis in the 5-set thriller. However, during the match, tennis fans witnessed Kyrgios and a fan sitting in the stands exchanging words with each other.
Kyrgios won the 3-hour marathon 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, 6-7(3), 7-5. However, despite an astonishing performance, his incident with the fan became the most talked-about part of the match. Following the match, interacting with the media, Kyrgios was questioned about his act.
Opening up about what happened during the match, Kyrgios said, “He literally came to the match to not even support anyone really, it was more just to stir up and disrespect. That’s fine. But if I give it back to you, then that’s just how it is.”
Kyrgios might have been apologetic for his act. However, it didn’t seem to reflect in his answer. Taking the question, the 2022 Australian Open doubles champion admitted, “Of one of the people disrespecting me, yes.” “Yes. I would not be doing that to someone who was supporting me,” he further added.

“Today, as soon as I won the match, I turned to him…I’ve been dealing with hate and negativity for a long time, so I don’t feel like I owed that person anything,” he ended while presenting his side of the story.
Following his win over Jubb, Kyrgios will next face the 26th seeded Serbian, Filip Krajinovic in the second round. Meanwhile, on the other hand, it will also be a thing to see whether officials fine Kyrgios for his act.
