Carlos Alcaraz, who was picked as a favorite in the French Open 2023, struggled to win against Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals, and the rest is history. Several critics and tennis legends picked Alcaraz, but Djokovic came out of the syllabus. Patrick McEnroe, brother of the legendary John McEnroe, was active throughout the French Open, discussing players and their games.

The 56-year-old witnessed the final of Roland Garros live, and he has some interesting insights to offer. In a recent episode, ‘Patrick’s full French Open re-cap on the Spotify podcast, ‘Holding Court with Patrick McEnroe,’ he talked about the play of Djokovic and Alcaraz, the strengths of Djokovic, and explained his take on the players.

The American player felt that Carlos Alcaraz is fun to watch, but Djokovic has what it takes to be a winner. He expressed, “Novak [Djokovic] at his best, managing the situation, came out in the final. Let me talk first about [Carlos] Alcaraz because, you know, he was way too hyped up.”?

McEnroe cited the flaws in the Spanish prodigy’s challenge against Djoker in the semi-final. He said, “He was way too uptight, you know, in the first set, you could see him, he was just going for too much.”The American veteran went on to explain that Alcaraz is fun to watch. He described, “The one thing you worry about Alcaraz, he is so explosive, he is so dynamic, he is so much fun to watch, and these are the things that make him fun to watch.”

McEnroe has also praised Alcaraz in his previous episodes, comparing him to his contemporaries. Although, this was more of a critical reality check that Carlos loses out due to his explosive nature in crucial situations.

After Djokovic won his 23rd slam, the former world number three in doubles opined on Alcaraz that, “A lot of times, he goes for it when he doesn’t have to go for it, and as I said, it’s highlight real tennis, but it’s not always winning tennis, particularly in best of 5, in a major.”

Patrick McEnroe hails Djokovic as the G.O.A.T

The brother of the 3-time Wimbledon champion expressed, “You are going up against Novak [Djokovic], and Novak, with all his experience and with all his smarts, you know sense that right away in the first couple of games and he just, he just went into sort of a lockdown mode which he can do at the blink of an eye and we saw him do it at tie breaks, during the whole tournament, you know barely dropping points, didn’t lose a tie. The greatest tie-break player by far of all times because of his visibility to calibrate his shots.”

Djoker has now put an end to the debate of G.O.A.T with his remarkable play and mind-numbing shots. Even with McEnroe’s analysis, it reflects how Carlos Alcaraz has a long way to go to even match half of Djokovic’s ruthless magic on court.
