Despite his incredible on-court skills, Nick Kyrgios more often than not makes the news for his unpredictable and combustible personality. The 28-year-old Australian’s infamous on and off-court antics and bouts of outbursts on fans, officials, and rivals often overshadow the fact that he is one of the most naturally gifted tennis players of recent times.
Kyrgios’ constant courtship with controversies has led to him being referred to as the ‘bad boy’ of tennis. Having said that, all ‘bad boys’ do have a vulnerable side, and Nick Kyrgios is no exception. He opened up on his mental health struggles yet again in a recent interview.

Nick Kyrgios gets candid about mental health woes
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist has, in many ways, been the most unique character in the world of tennis in recent memory. From being considered a genuine talent on the tennis court to getting embroiled in a myriad of controversies, Kyrgios has done and experienced it all. However, he also hasn’t shied away from opening up about his long battle with debilitating mental health issues.
In a recent interview with Men’s Health, Nick Kyrgios bared it all regarding the darkest period of his life. Kyrgios said, “I was numb. I was running on autopilot every day… My career was on autopilot. I was doing things because I was told to do them. I literally couldn’t feel anything at all. The only time I felt anything was when I was doing those things or when I was drinking. That’s when I felt okay, and that’s concerning.
Kyrgios further added, “I was playing in tournaments, thousands of people watching me, and I didn’t feel anything. Most people would feel great being able to do that. I felt terrible. It was a rough time, not pleasant at all, never remotely close to decent.”

This was not the first time the Australian spoke about his internal struggles. He shed light on this matter in an episode of Netflix’s tennis docuseries Break Point.

Kyrgios’ startling revelations in Netflix docuseries Break Point
In an episode of Netflix’s recently released tennis docuseries Break Point Part 2, Nick Kyrgios revealed that his mental health conditions took a rather extreme turn during the later period of 2019 and continued into 2020. He reminisced about the period during his second-round Wimbledon loss against Rafael Nadal in 2019. He resorted to self-harm tendencies and even contemplated suicide.
It was during this time, he got himself admitted to a psychiatric ward in London in order to heal himself. Kyrgios later mentioned that the constant support of his current girlfriend Costeen Hatzi made it possible for him to recover from such a bleak period of his life.
