In a match that was beyond player versus player, Novak Djokovic found himself contesting not only with Jannik Sinner but also with the energy of the Italian crowd rallying behind their only representative in the tournament. With the backing of the home crowd, Sinner got some much-needed confidence and he eventually defeated the Serbian superstar in a classic 3-set thriller.

Interestingly, Djokovic who was oozing confidence before the ATP Finals met with a reality check straight after the match. In his post-match interview, he said that it was pretty obvious that the crowd would go for Sinner given the fact that he was Italian.

“Well, I mean, it was expected. Obviously him being the only Italian in the tournament, playing in Italy, there was a big hype, a big excitement for him to play in front of his home crowd. He’s in a great form. It’s normal that crowd wanted him to win,” said Djokovic in the post-match conference.

Thus, Djokovic, who was considering himself as a formidable force met with a reality check just days into the tournament. While he claimed to be the one winning the tournament, he suggested that he was pretty confident of breaking the record held by Djoker himself and Roger Federer combined.
