New year but it is the same old Daniil Medvedev. Barely two weeks have passed since the ATP No. 7 was fined more than half his prize money for unsportsmanlike conduct in the 2025 Melbourne Slam, but the saga has continued in Rotterdam. Medvedev’s Round of 32 win against Stan Wawrinka received the spotlight, but not for the Russian’s impressive performance. His feud with the chair umpire garnered attention, leaving the fans quite unimpressed.
Medvedev defeated Swiss veteran Stanislas Wawrinka in three sets 6(8)-7(10), 6-4, 6-1 in Center Court today. However, during the game’s first set, when the former ATP no 1 tried to secure a love hold at 5-5, 40-0, he was penalized with a time violation by chair umpire Adel Nour. Nour claimed Medvedev had exceeded the allowed time between points.
As a result, ATP No. 7 had to continue under penalty instead of receiving three uncontested game points. Medvedev, believing the delay happened due to the ball girl, was displeased with Nour’s decision – to say the least. And he made his infuriation well-known. The temperamental them spent the next changeover monologuing against the chair umpire.

“Hey!! You’re very bad. You see nothing. Why are you warning me? The ball kid wasn’t giving me the ball. You have no eyes, man. You’re very bad. I remember what happened with Karen Khachanov. Do you remember? You have no eyes. You see nothing! Do you have a problem? You are absolute trash!! Unbelievable,” he yelled, disappointed. But more was to come.
Medvedev continued, “I was calm, but you’re searching for trouble man. You have some actual deep problems. I didn’t talk to you. I don’t say anything. And then you act like this… You have some problems man. Open your eyes. Open your brain. I know you’re just sitting there, but think a little more. Come on, give me energy.”
The star’s momentarily loss of control grabbed many eyeballs, including The Tennis Letter who shared it on their official X profile. Under their post, fans dropped their reactions dissing the ATP No. 7 for his disrespectful behavior against Nour.

Fans slam Daniil Medvedev for his petulant behavior with chair umpire
“So disrespectful…I can’t believe that they have to put up with shit like this… Where does it end?” commented a fan. This fan’s statement highlighted Daniil Medvedev’s unacceptable attitude, which first stirred controversy this year during his Round 1 victory against Kasidit Samrej at the Australian Open. He smashed his racket angrily at the net multiple times and damaged one of the net cameras. Medvedev was penalized more than $10,000 – and a further $66,000 in the next round against Learner Tien, for throwing his racket, calling out the umpire and skipping the mandatory post-match press conference. However, the backlash didn’t end there.
Another fan wrote: “Medvedev always unhappy with the umpire! When is he ever happy with decisions ??” This comment reminded the fraternity of the 2024 Wimbledon when Medvedev engaged in a feud with chair umpire Eva Asderaki. Playing the SF against Carlos Alcaraz, the chair umpire Asderaki ruled that the Russian player had failed to return a drop shot before the second bounce. Angry at the decision which handed Alcaraz a serve break, he ranted to Asderaki in Russian and received a code violation.

Medvedev’s actions pushed another fan to sheer embarrassment as who believed, “He really needs to learn to be respectful.” Today’s outburst was another in a long series of such behavior. During his second-round match against Jiri Lehecka in the 2024 Cincinnati Open, Medvedev vented his frustration in French during the match’s second and deciding set. Although he claimed he was talking to himself, chair umpire Aurelie Tourte handed him a code violation. “Why are you giving me a code violation? I’m talking to myself. What’s the problem? In the other match, when I was talking to myself, you didn’t do anything. I’m speaking to myself.. what’s the problem?” he confronted. However, the chair umpire dismissed his claim and remained firm on her decision.
Since heavy penalties have hardly impacted Medvedev’s mindset, the fraternity believed the ATP needed to intervene for the sake of chair umpires. “So disrespectful. It’s unbelievable @atptour doesn’t do anything to stop harassment against umpires,” commented a person.
