Daniil Medvedev won the National Bank Open last week in Toronto. The Russian defeated Reilly Opelka in a tight final and claimed his maiden title in Canada. However, the World No.2 will be aiming to add a maiden Grand Slam title in his cabinet.

Daniil Medvedev came really close to clinching the 2019 US Open title. However, the left arm of Rafael Nadal was a barrier between him and his maiden Grand Slam title. A thrilling five-setter between the two players entertained the fans and kept everyone at the edge of their seats. However, Medvedev can be certain of a few things this year, one being Nadal not playing at the US Open.

A series of big names have withdrawn from the tournament due to injuries and other reasons. It gives a great impetus to Medvedev’s campaign who has been in red hot form. “When I play good in New York, I can get good results, and of course, yeah, I want to win it,” said Medvedev.

“I’m going to try to do my best. If I manage to keep the level I’m playing at right now, I have good chances to go far,” said Medvedev after his Cincinnati Open quarterfinal as reported by Channel News Asia.

Medvedev’s only challenge in New York is Novak Djokovic

Daniil Medvedev has termed Novak Djokovic as the main contender at the US Open this year. The World No.1 has already won the first three Grand Slams this year and will be looking for a calendar Grand Slam. However, Medvedev’s fine form leading up to the US Open can change the story.

“Definitely Novak is going to be the highest contender. He’s winning almost all the Grand Slams right now. He won already 20. He has experience,” said Medvedev. Daniil will also be looking to avenge his Australian Open loss this year against the Serb.

“He has a level. I’m not gonna lie,” said Medvedev in all honesty.
