Daniil Medvedev’s heartbreak after losing his third Australian Open final is understandable. After all, the 2024 final ended up being the second Australian Open final Medvedev lost despite having led eventual champion Jannik Sinner by two sets at one point. During the post-match on-court speech, Medvedev cut a dejected figure, and in an emotional moment, he reached out to his wife and daughter.

Medvedev’s wife, who has been almost a constant presence in his box across recent years at the biggest of events, couldn’t attend the Australian Open this time around. Quite clearly, Medvedev missed them dearly, and as he was saying the words, he almost choked up.

The 2024 Australian Open final was Medvedev’s 6th appearance in the final of a Grand Slam. However, he could not add to his one and only Slam win, which came against Novak Djokovic at the 2021 US Open. The loss proved to be a bitter pill to swallow for the Russian hard-court specialist, and his family was on his mind after the match came to an end.

Medvedev said, “I don’t know if they turned off the TV, but Dasha, Alisha, if you’re watching, it felt like you were there with me.” Clearly choked with emotions, Medvedev added, “Unfortunately I couldn’t make it today. But I’m gonna try to make it work next time for you”.

It remains to be seen how Medvedev performs across the rest of the season. The next Grand Slam in a few months’ time is the French Open, followed shortly after by Wimbledon. However, Medvedev has never been very comfortable playing on clay, which is the surface for the French Open, and on grass, the surface for Wimbledon. If we go by history, then it’s likely that we’ll have to wait until the US Open to see Medvedev at his best at a Grand Slam again.

The last time Medvedev made it to the final of a Grand Slam was at the 2023 US Open. It was a repeat of the 2021 final, but unfortunately for Medvedev, this time around, Djokovic was in no mood to allow the Russian to assert his dominance. Djokovic ran away with it, and Medvedev came out second best in every department.
